Violent Protests Erupt Over 'I Love Muhammad' Graffiti in Maharashtra

Authorities in Maharashtra's Ahilyanagar district have taken 30 individuals into custody following a protest by a group of Muslims against graffiti that read 'I love Muhammad' on a roadway, as reported on Monday.

Protesters blocked the key Ahilyanagar-Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Road, despite one arrest related to the graffiti incident, according to an unnamed official.

As police attempted to maintain order, some demonstrators began throwing stones, prompting law enforcement to use batons to restore peace, the official stated.

A video showcasing the graffiti circulated widely on social media on Sunday night, igniting protests the following day, as noted by a local news outlet.

Superintendent of Police Somnath Gharge confirmed that measures were being taken against those involved. He reassured the public that the situation was under control and urged citizens not to propagate rumors.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that an investigation would be conducted to determine if there was an orchestrated effort to incite unrest through the display of such messages.

He emphasized that while individuals are free to practice their faith, they should refrain from actions that could lead to division.

Earlier this month in Uttar Pradesh, a similar controversy arose over 'I love Muhammad' banners during an Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi procession, leading to objections from Hindu groups. Police cited regulations against introducing new customs in religious events and initiated legal action against 24 individuals for allegedly disrupting communal harmony.

This police response triggered further protests in various districts of Uttar Pradesh and beyond, some resulting in confrontations with law enforcement.

As of September 23, over 1,300 individuals had been charged in 21 first information reports nationwide, according to the Association for Protection of Civil Rights, with 38 arrests made, including one in Mumbai's Byculla area.
